Boost Home Comfort with these 6 Winter Prep Tips

Home ComfortBaby, it’s cold outside! As temperatures drop and bitter cold officially takes over, coziness is a top priority. If you put in the work now, you’ll boost home comfort, stay cozy (and save money) all winter long. Filters, humidifiers and draft snakes are all winter home comfort must-haves. And to top it off, a mug full of steamy, hot chocolate. Here are 6 simple tips you’ll want to put on your NJ home winterization list asap.

1. Change the Furnace Air Filter

It’s so simple to do, it can be easy to forget. Remember to replace or clean your furnace air filter at least once a month during the heating seasons. Why? Dirty filters not only send dirty air circulating through your home, the restricted airflow can also increase energy demands.

2. Block the Drafts

Per the U.S. Department of Energy, drafts can waste anywhere from five to thirty percent of your home’s energy use. Make a draft snake by rolling up a bath towel under a drafty door to keep the chill-out, stay comfortable and boost energy efficiency.

3. Tune-Up Your Heating System

You’ve heard it from us before. Machines need tune-ups in order to run their best. Would you run your car for years without a maintenance check? We think not. The same goes for your heating equipment. If your heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems aren’t working as well as they could, you’re not only sacrificing comfort, but also increasing energy bills. Keep the furnace clean, adjusted and lubricated and it will run strong all winter long. With a regular maintenance check, you’re less likely to be faced with a heating emergency in the middle of winter.

4. Restore Balance of Humidity

Adding moisture is essential as colder air is unable to hold much moisture and tends to be dry; indoor humidity level of 30-40% is recommended for winter months. Use a whole-house humidifier to give you optimum air quality and improved level of comfort on the driest of days.

5. Install a Smart Thermostat

Do you still have an old-school thermostat? You’re not alone. But you’re probably also not as comfortable as you should be. Consider investing in a smart thermostat that will automatically dial back while you sleep, give you control of the temperature in your home from any location, and learn from your behaviors.

6. Cozy Up with Some Hot Chocolate
