Diagnosing Common Boiler Repair Problems: Boiler Repair NJ

boiler repair NJLooking for Boiler Repair in NJ?

Boilers usually have a long life expectancy. Even though they’re durable and require little maintenance, that doesn’t mean they won’t experience problems from time to time. The boiler repair NJ experts at Brown’s have put together a list of 6 common problems and what to do about them.

Common Boiler Repair Problems

1. Power Supply

If your boiler isn’t working, first check whether the pilot light is on or off. Check the power supply and circuit breaker switch. Check the power supply, the emergency shut off switch (always red in color by the unit or at the top of your stairs if your boiler is in the basement) and circuit breaker switch. If the boiler has a display screen look for error codes about ignition or shutdown. Most modern day boilers do not operate off of standing pilots, but the older ones still do.

2. Leaking

If you see water surrounding your boiler, it’s likely you’re facing a leak which can lead to wasted water and fuel consumption.

3. Water Temperature or Pressure

Cold water is a clear sign of a malfunctioning boiler. Surprisingly, if the water is too hot, that can also indicate an issue with the unit. Inconsistent water temperature or pressure can be due to a malfunction in the heating element or faulty thermostat. Make sure your thermostat has fresh batteries and if it is heating one zone and not another, that is a zone valve problem which is like the traffic cop of your system and isn’t directing hot water from the boiler to that zone.

4. Unusual Odors

Metallic odor or odd colors in hot water can be due to rusty pipes or a malfunctioning boiler. Any gas odors must be taken seriously. Open any windows, turn off the emergency shutoff switch and evacuate your house. Call NJNG immediately from  cell phone outside your house  Call NJNG @ 800-GAS-LEAK (800-427-5325). Call Brown’s for an emergency boiler repair service immediately.

5. Noise

If you hear any hissing, popping or cracking sounds, the reason might be due to uneven water distribution from iron or mineral deposits. This can prevent the heating elements form functioning properly. Do you hear gurgling or water movement in your baseboard or radiator?  That is air in the lines and the lines need to purged of air.

6. Boiler Doesn’t Ignite

If you looked at all power sources  (see #1) and everything checks out, there might be a venting or flue blockage.  If you suspect any of the above boiler malfunctions, don’t hesitate to give us a call 732-741-0694.
