4 Air Conditioning Season Tips

Air Conditioning Season Tips Browns

Finally, warmer weather is on the way! But, that means the hot, muggy days of summer will follow. Is your air conditioner ready for another humid New Jersey summer? Before the hottest days of the year arrive, check out these air conditioning season tips to help make your home more energy efficient and save on cooling costs.

1. Schedule an AC Tune Up

The first thing to do before summer starts is to schedule a tune up with a professional HVAC contractor. A licensed, professional HVAC technician will inspect and service the inner parts of your system, diagnose any problems to prevent any major (and unexpected) repair jobs and help to prolong the life of your unit. It is also important to schedule a proper maintenance appointment annually to prevent a voided warranty.

2. Clean and/or Replace All Filters

Dirty filters are notorious for making your air conditioning unit work harder than necessary. Not only can dirty filters reduce the air quality in your home, aggravating allergies, but they can also cause your unit to malfunction.

  • If you have a 1” filter, it should be replaced every two months.
  • If you have a 5” media filter, this filter should be at least every year (or sooner if you have pets or smokers in the home).
  • Electronic Air Cleaners should be cleaned every two months.

3. Clear Debris Away from the Outdoor Unit

Any overgrown trees, shrubs or plants near the condenser unit can potentially interfere with air flow that the air conditioner requires to function efficiently. Additionally, any plants that hang over the unit can shed leaves and sticks. After a long winter, this debris can accumulate inside and interfere with operation. Take the time to clear away debris at least two feet from the unit’s base.

4. Replace Insulation on Coolant Lines

Finally, be sure to inspect your coolant line insulation. Deteriorated insulation on your outdoor air conditioning lines can negatively affect efficiency and energy costs. If the insulated sleeves on your coolant lines have begun to rot or have started to fray, be sure to replace them immediately.
