Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget About Air Conditioner Maintenance
Spring is on the way, which means it’s time to wipe away the grime and freshen things up around the house. Since winter is especially tough on outdoor HVAC equipment, it’s important to do some basic air conditioning maintenance at the beginning of every cooling season. With a few checks and minimal effort, you can help to ensure a trouble-free (and comfortable) summer ahead.
Here are 5 important HVAC reminders you can DIY before switching the thermostat setting to ‘cool’ for the New Jersey summer heat.
Air Conditioning Maintenance Spring Checklist
1. Clear the Gunk
When you’re spring cleaning around the house, much less a winter-weather-beaten one, start by removing all the gunk you’ve been ignoring. Grab a couple garbage bags and be thorough. Start with the outdoor unit and remove any covers, blankets or lids. You may find trash, leaves or other vegetation has blown into or against the coil; remove that debris to get the best possible performance from your air conditioning system and reduce the risk of unnecessary repairs.
2. Inspect the Unit
Look at the outdoor unit panels; if anything is missing or out of place, call a qualified technician before starting things up. Missing pieces or damaged parts can lead to a decrease in energy efficiency and cause much larger problems down the road.
3. Replace the Air Filter
Your air filter keeps dirt, pollen and other allergens from entering your ventilation system, improving indoor air quality and home comfort. It also increases your air conditioner equipment efficiency which can cut operating costs by more than 10% and reduce the risk of untimely breakdowns! To enhance heating and cooling performance, it is recommended to change your high-efficiency air filter every month.
4. Check the Coil Drainage Hose
The hose, also called the condensate line, needs to flow to a drain or the tray could potentially flood. Check to make sure the line is in the correct place, that it’s attached and draining to the proper location. Not sure what to look for? Don’t stress, we’ll check this during your annual tune-up appointment.
5. Test it Out
Before you need it, test it out. A brief inspection of your HVAC unit now could help your system run worry-free through the heat of the summer months. A qualified technician at Brown’s Heating, Cooling & Plumbing will offer you the most thorough spring cleaning air conditioner maintenance check to avoid system failure in the hottest months of the year. We’ll also help you address any concerns about your unit’s lifespan and offer any necessary recommendations regarding the installation of a new unit.
